What's Giftbox?

Every year, I run an online Secret Santa with my friends where we make gifts for each other instead of buying them. I always look forward to getting these handmade, personalised gifts.

Let’s try this with Hack Club!

  1. Sign up for Giftbox by 8 Dec.
  2. Receive a gift recipient on 10 Dec. We’ll try to match your interests and likes.
  3. Make something fun that they might like — a website, a tool, a game, an interactive story. You’re not allowed to buy anything!
  4. Submit your gift by 25 Dec — and get a gift from someone else!

Giftbox is double-dippable with Hack Club Milkyway.

FAQs

Am I eligible?

You can participate if you are between 13 to 18 years old (inclusive).

What kind of projects can I make?

You can make any kind of project that is shipped — something that others can experience easily on the internet. This includes (but is not limited to): a deployed website, a web game, an app with downloads for Win/Mac/Linux, a released Python package, a released Minecraft mod, etc.

Hardware projects are not allowed.

You should expect to spend a minimum of at least 1-2 hours working on your gift.

What if I sign up and realise that I don't want to make a gift later?

Giftbox trusts you to make one — if you don't, someone won't get a gift, and it'll be really sad! We ask that you truly commit to this event — it'll only take an hour or two to make someone's day :)

If you truly do not want to make something, please reach out to me as soon as possible.

I'm also free anytime if you need help figuring out what to make or deploying your project so that everyone can receive one.

Can I work in a team?

Please sign up and submit individually! You may get help for your project from others, but each person who signs up needs to submit one project.

Do I need to track my time?

You do not need to track your time for Giftbox.

If you are planning to make a game and double-dip it with Milkyway, you should track your time on the Milkyway platform.
